Posters & Wall Art Website Re-Designed

January 11, 2016 by Ray

Wilmington Posters and Wall Art

Posters, graphics and wall art are a popular item to purchase online, either for personal or business purposes. I re-designed a website I originally built 8 years ago to sell posters and prints online through my affiliate relationship with AllPosters.com, the world’s largest poster store.

My new website is mobile-responsive and is a great example of how anyone can monetize a personal blog or website, or add an income stream to an existing commercial site by placing text ads or banner ads to items that are related to the main theme of your site. Visit http://PostersandWallArt.com to see how I optimized it with my own keywords so that I had a chance of ranking in Google search results. Buy a Wilmington DE motivational poster or a cute kittens poster or funny poster while you’re there!

Beer affiliate marketingContact me anytime if you’d like to brainstorm how to incorporate affiliate advertising or other income streams into your own business model. Of course, it’s easier to add these types of links to personal sites where you’re not as concerned with distracting your visitors from the main goal of buying your products or services. For example, the first website I ever built (shortly after Al Gore invented the internet) was my http://WorldofBeerBottles.com. That’s where I first gained experience with adding affiliate advertising banners for beer posters, “Beer of the Month Clubs”, beer themed books and even unrelated items such as flowers and travel.

Speaking of that, I’ll soon update Travel USA & World, which I specifically built as a shopping mall of major travel providers such as Travelocity, Priceline, Hotwire.com, Hotels.com, car rentals, online airline tickets, and other travel links. To improve SEO and to make it visitor-friendly, I include valuable information such as travel tips and other useful information for travelers. Wilmington DE travel! There are even articles submitted to me by other websites who were happy to provide me with business & pleasure travel ideas in exchange for links to their own websites.

Travel affiliate advertisingRemember, you can’t just borrow some text and images and put up a junky site. You neet to treat it as a business and put effort into quality content and search engine optimization including title tags, meta description, image alt tags, submitting to search engines and all of the other little jobs I include when building a website for a customer in Wilmington, Delaware or anywhere else in the USA. Adding travel posters helps me cross-market!

If you have a special interest or hobby to write about, let me help you share it with the world and you may be able to work in some affiliate links to websites to earn some revenue!

Visible Tips for Your Website

September 3, 2015 by Ray

Prevent the most common visible website mistakes.
Website developmentBuild your website from the visitor’s perspective and make it easy for them to take action (such as calling for information, filling out your contact form or purchasing online). You have under 5 seconds to grab the attention of your prospects before they click away from your site (possibly forever). Call or email us with any questions.

Top 30 Visual Design Tips

Your Domain Name should be logical and search engine friendly like www.web-design.com

Avoid clutter and “busy” backgrounds – white space is important.

Make it easy to skim – lots of subheadings, short paragraphs. Get ideas across quickly.

Be concise – avoid too much text on main pages of site.

Bullet lists are very effective. List features, benefits, examples.

“Content is King!” Incorporate the “keywords” your visitors are searching for.

Each page of your site should focus on different SEO keywords, giving you more chances for higher rank in search engines.

Don’t write from your perspective. Give visitors the answers they seek! Make them want to contact you.

Build trust by actually providing solid information.

Place contact info, or a link to it, on the top and/or bottom of each page. Sample

What separates you from the competition? Best, Free, Most experienced, …

Keep content accurate and up-to-date. Outdated or bad info drives visitors away for good.

Keep navigation consistent and clear – make it easy to find things on each page.   Sample

Explain what you’re linking to, both internally and externally.

Ensure easy access to each page. Large sites may need a Site Map, Search Feature or drop-down menu.

Make links apparent (blue, underlined, or stand out).

Avoid underlining words if they’re not links.   [oops!]

Test links to be sure they function correctly. Remove dead external links.

Consider a “Last Modified” date on time-sensitive material.

animated gif Avoid distractions such as blinking text, scrolling text, animated GIFs, or sound files.
under construction

Don’t annoy visitors with automatic pop-up windows.

Use contrasting colors or simple backgrounds for best possible readability.

Don’t type more than a few words in ALL CAPS.

Always check spelling and make text large enough to read – especially if your target audience includes seniors.

Don’t add graphics just to make pages pretty. Appropriate graphics (logo, photos, etc.) will help convey and reinforce your message. Some people are more visual than others.

Same idea with sound files. IF appropriate, sound bites or background music can add to viewers experience. Give visitors control to turn on and off.

Compress image files which can cause slow page loading. (100 KB vs. 3 MB) — Don’t make your customers wait!

Beware of excess multimedia – can cause confusion and hurt search engine rank.

Avoid “Splash” pages if they don’t answer questions.

What turns you off from a site?

Basic Website Tips

August 31, 2015 by Ray

What Makes a Great Website?

Website development

If you’re building your own site to save money, either with web-publishing software or with an online site builder, make it attractive. But don’t forget critical elements (often invisible) that are necessary to bring in traffic. Finally, what you have must be functional to make it easy for visitors so they don’t leave without reading what you had to offer!

10 Steps Toward a Successful Website

  1. Establish a concise list of objectives. What is your main goal?
  2. Understand the target audience.
What information do they need, and how fast? Will graphics or video help?
  3. Provide quality content and keep it concise.
It must immediately convey it’s purpose, or visitors will leave.
  4. Develop a site map based on a logical sequence to display information.
  5. Keep the visitor in mind when developing a navigation scheme.
The flow from page to page should be logical and consistent.
  6. Utilize multimedia features if they aid communication.
Mouse rollovers, animated images, sound, etc. can reinforce the text.
  7. Make it Search Engine friendly (Google friendly!). Appropriate title, SEO keywords and META tags are essential to generating traffic.
  8. Maintain the site on a regular basis to keep it fresh and give visitors a reason to return.
  9. Integrate the site with other components of your marketing plan.
  10. Work with a professional developer who has an understanding of both technological and marketing aspects.           More Web Design and SEO tips!

Keep Your Site Working Hard

Your business has a website because it’s a cost-effective way to supplement advertising to prospects and to maintain contact with customers. Include the web address in all marketing material, correspondence, signage, and phone directory ads. You want your site to be more attractive and more user-friendly than the websites of your competition. You’re happy with the design, structure and your marketing video. But once the site is online, it can be all too easy to neglect a key ingredient—your content!

The site may have contained informative and relevant information when it was built, but is it still current and correct? It can cost very little time or money to ensure that your website continues to do it’s best to help your business thrive. If you don’t put that small effort in, visitors can be quickly “turned off” by faulty or outdated information. Here are steps to keep the site working hard for you:

  1. Maintain the site on a regular basis to keep it fresh and give visitors a reason to return.
Outdated information gives the impression that you’re unreliable. Your Webmaster or designer can make it easy for you to make your own timely changes to parts of the site. In minutes, you can change a “weekly specials” page, add new products, update pricing information or edit a “customer news” page.
  2. Provide quality content, including keywords that visitors are looking for. Keywords and content are the most important factors for your pages to rank high in search engines (at no expense to you). Make it easier for people to find you by incorporating the SEO words and phrases they’re searching for.
  3. Keep it customer focused. Give your visitors what they seek or they will find someone else who will. Know the target audience for your products or services. Add a page to concisely address how you can fill the visitor’s needs or they will leave.
  4. Integrate the site with your marketing plan. For a particular campaign, you may want to direct visitors to a specific “landing page”, instead of the home page.

It’s always a good idea to visit the websites of your competitors to get more ideas on improving your website. But the most important thing is to view your site from the eyes of visitors. Give them what they want!

Website Videos for Marketing & Demonstration

August 8, 2015 by Ray

Video Marketing continues to grow in importance. People like videos – especially short ones. Google likes videos so much that they own YouTube and are happy to promote it.

Even this incredibly simple video that I put together ranks on page 2 of results if you Google “wilmington de web designer”.
Not only should your website feature your general-purpose 30-60 second marketing video, but you should consider adding one to nearly every main page of your business website. If you have 5 different categories of services, create a brief video for each and place it near the top of the page. It’s amazing how many people will view the video instead of reading a few lines of text.

The Best Videos

Besides conveying information, add some humor or cute puppies or attractive ladies and visitors will engage more fully and pay attention. Then be sure to include a Call To Action (CTA), so that the viewer will take the next step. Ask them to

  • Call for more information
  • Click to download a free PDF
  • Subscribe to your newsletter
  • Visit your Facebook Page
  • Take advantage of special offer
  • Buy now!

Videographer, Webmaster Ray, or YOU

Check with your favorite videographer, but be sure to create a script first. It’s important to be concise, so there’s no room for content that’s off-target or the viewer will stop watching. Even if you’re not in the Wilmington, Delaware area, I can assemble your video if you send images, voiceover script and even video clips. Or, if in Wilmington, DE, I’ll set you up with a photographer to visit you to shoot and will work with him to assemble the final product. We’ll upload to YouTube and then embed it in your website to get twice the bang for the buck.

You can even attempt to film and create it yourself, using either the free Windows Movie Maker or premium products. Just add music, captions and make yourself a star!
